With its two coasts, and access to the Channel and to the Atlantic, Devon was involved in international trade even before the Romans arrived. Its fishermen have caught everything from local shellfish to Newfoundland cod. And the impact of naval warfare was inevitable. Plymouth remains a naval port, but most trade has moved to ports with deeper water. Fishing is still important, but leisure boating is now supreme in most Devon harbours.
